What is a Deep Venous Thrombosis?
Deep venous thrombosis, or DVT, refers to blood clot formation within the major veins of the body. Most commonly, deep venous thrombosis occurs in the legs, where it can cause pain and swelling. Other times, DVT can occur in the arms or even in the large veins of the chest and abdomen. The treatment for deep venous thrombosis has traditionally been a long course (6 months) of blood thinners, the most common blood thinner being Coumadin. This has been the standard therapy for many decades. However, with the recent advancement of medical technology and the field of Interventional Radiology, there are now better methods of treatment for deep venous thrombosis. Innovative DVT treatment techniques can be used to get rid of the blood clot immediately with instantaneous improvement of symptoms and reduce long-term complications of deep venous thrombosis that are common with conventional blood thinner therapy. The physicians of the SDI Interventional Radiology team are amongst the most highly trained and specialized doctors in the country for this type of DVT treatment. Our physicians are also highly specialized in a unique type of left leg DVT treatment that tends to occur in women who have had children. The condition is called May Thurner Syndrome, and the symptoms include chronic left leg pain and swelling and multiple, recurrent deep venous thrombosis of the left leg. Typically, standard treatment for deep venous thrombosis in these patients fails, and the DVT does not go away. The SDI Interventional Radiologists are usually very successful with DVT treatment for May Thurner Syndrome. May Thurner syndrome can have devastating long term complications such as severe left leg pain and swelling if there is not proper treatment for deep venous thrombosis associated with this condition. Patients with DVT who cannot receive blood thinners (anticoagulation) may be a candidate for IVC Filter Placement and Removal.
