Interventional Neuroradiology (Neurointerventions)
Interventional Neuroradiology is a combination of neuroradiology (the subspecialty area of radiology devoted to the brain and spine) and interventional radiology (the subspecialty area of radiology devoted to the use of medical imaging technology to guide less treatment alternatives to surgery). Neurointerventions are procedures performed by these specialists in the treatment of conditions of the brain and spinal cord.
These procedures include using embolization techniques for the nonsurgical treatment of life-threatening brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVM) or abnormal blood vessel communications such as carotid-cavernous fistula.
Neurointerventional procedures performed on an emergency basis offer the possibility of unblocking the suddenly clogged blood vessels of an acute stroke (one that has started only a few hours ago) before permanent brain damage sets in.
Neurointerventional procedures are performed by specially trained SDI Radiologists at St. Joseph's Hospital.
