Treatment for Primary Liver Tumors and Liver Metastases: SIR-Spheres Therapy
Liver radioembolization is a promising new treatment for primary liver tumors and liver metastases. It can be performed as a primary therapy, or for tumors that have not responded well to chemotherapy. The treatment is also called SIR-Spheres therapy, and more information can be found at Sirtex Medical. The procedure is performed in several sessions and is entirely done through a tiny incision in the skin, where the physician enters the femoral artery to gain access to the arterial system. A tiny catheter is placed directly into the arteries feeding the liver tumors, and microscopic beads which emit radiation therapy are delivered directly to the tumors. One of our physicians, Dr. Montague, is extensively experienced and well-versed in SIR-Spheres treatment. Although the treatment is relatively new, Dr. Montague has performed over 50 SIR-Spheres procedures in the last 2-3 years. |
